Wildlife of the Ballinderry River

There is a rich diversity of plants (flora) and animals (fauna) in the Ballinderry River system.
Some of this flora and fauna is aquatic, living in the water. Other fauna is amphibious, living partly in the water and partly on the land. The remainder are terrestrial, living along or near the river bank.

Much of this wildlife is being recorded in a wildlife atlas for the Ballinderry River catchment.

Most of the wildlife in the Ballinderry River catchment has been here since the end of the last ice age (roughly 10,000 years ago); we call these plants and animals Native Species.

However, some have been brought here, from foreign lands, by people, these are known as Non-Native Species.

Non-native species can sometimes out-compete the native wildlife for space and food, and spread rapidly throughout the rivers and countryside. They can have a devastating effect on the native wildlife and the local environment. We call these species Invasive Non-Native.
