Finding a CURE for litter on the Ballinderry River
The CURE volunteers were out in force again this weekend in a bid to get rid of the fly tipping along the banks of the river at Tullylagan and re-open a path so that visitors can enjoy the river.
Old car tyres, plastic and glass bottles, polystyrene burger boxes and even a washing machine were just some of the things that the CURE volunteers collected from under the Tullylagan Bridge, which had been thrown over the bridge, into the secluded river valley below.
‘The CURE (Clean Up the River Environment) Group is made up of all sorts of folk who have an interest in the river, wildlife or those who just want to get out into the fresh air and make a difference’, explained Eamon Cullen, CURE Coordinator. ‘Recently 1st Cookstown Scouts have joined the group which is full of young enthusiastic members wanting to get involved and help clean up the river’.
Frank Mitchell, Conservation and Access Officer for the Ballinderry River Enhancement Association (BREA) said, ‘It’s important that we look after these secluded parts of the river because they are really important for our wildlife and great places for us to enjoy the river’.
The CURE Group was set up by BREA as part of WWF Northern Ireland’s RIPPLE Project, which is a community based project to help manage and conserve the Ballinderry River. The CURE clean up days are supported by Cookstown District Council.
Two more clean-up days are planned for Saturday 6th March at Kildress and Saturday 17th April at the Glenavon (12-3pm). All are welcome to attend. Eamon added, ‘it’s a great way to get out, get some exercise, enjoy the river and help make a difference to our local environment at the same time, so come along and get involved, there is something for everyone’.
