White-clawed crayfish conservation project
In 2006, the Ballinderry River Enhancement Association secured two years funding to establish the Ballinderry White-clawed Crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes Breeding and Reintroduction Programme.
Funding was invested in capital works to create a self-sustaining, long-term, conservation project for white-clawed crayfish in the Ballinderry River system.
The project has established the island of Ireland’s first Ark site for white-clawed crayfish A. pallipes, an educational facility, public awareness material and a survey; resulting in a better understanding of the species’ distribution and status in the catchment area and their associated habitat requirements. This survey, the most detailed undertaken on crayfish in a single river catchment, has also identified areas where white-clawed crayfish from the Ark site could be introduced/re-introduced to the river, to expand their range.
